Finnish in your pocket

Pocketbooks are well named and they are essential when you go on holiday to a country where they don’t talk to much English on a regular basis. For example Finland.

If you are like me and have a beloved Iphone and  Itunes account you can get a small, free and cute application called

Hei Finland

It has 7 categories like: transport, social life, restaurant,  and emergency.

The application provides audio samples and how the word or sentence is written.

The promised Land of Heavy Metal

Watch the trailer.

It’s a 90 minutes long HD TV documentary about the history and philosophy about Heavy Metal and how it became such a big part of Finland. The documentary tells the story from the “underground” to the mainstream, by interviewing famous musicians(such as HIM, Dimmu Borgir, Children of Bodom & much more), experts and events organizers, a psychiatrist and a doctor of theology.

It takes you from the places you know you will find metal to the places you would least expect to find it, like in a church or the presidents house!

New Year Celebrations

The Cathedral by night - the steps get filled up quickly at New Year!

When: 31 Dec 2008 (annual)

Where: Senate Square

By day, Helsinki’s Neoclassical Senate Square is a sedate affair. But come night-time on New Year’s Eve, things look very different. Pile on the fleeces and prepare for a noisy countdown to the New Year.

The architectural splendour of the square makes it a perfect gathering place for enthusiastic (and warmly dressed) revellers. The steps of the cathedral are the best spot to go for – space here goes quickly so arrive as early as you can. Candles are an optional prop and illuminate the square before fireworks light up the sky. It’s not difficult to make friends at times like this, so even if you have no plans for the long night ahead after the public shrieking, you are sure to find out where the party crowd is heading. It’s certainly worth warming up in Helsinki’s favoured location. One last tip – if you can’t count backwards in Finnish, you may find yourself a bit left out at a crucial time!

Elton John – The Red Piano

When: 1. Dec 2008

Where: Hartwall Arena

Rock and pop legend Elton John performs his stage show The Red Piano, featuring spectacular inflatables, visuals and extravagant sets, at Helsinki’s Hartwall Arena.

Few entertainers have produced classic, enduring tunes spanning decades, but Elton is one of them. Back in the 1970s he was one of pop’s biggest stars and his popularity has continued into the new millennium. Diversity and versatility underscore Elton’s music-writing flair, using soul, rock, disco and balladry to great acclaim. His credibility was restored with the release of his 2001 album, Songs from the West Coast, which recalled his classic early 1970s sound. Peachtree Road (2004) and The Captain and the Kid, from two years later, have continued to mine that rich musical seam.

Helsinki International Fashion Fair

When: Nov 2008 (annual)

Where: Helsinki Fair Centre

Fashion fairs tend to be strictly trade only, but this November the lucky public can get a glimpse of what’s to come, during the International Fashion Fair at the Helsinki Fair Centre.

This festival shows off a huge collection of clothing across the ladies’, men’s, children’s and young people’s fashion sectors. Recent years have welcomed an expansion beyond the restrictions of clothing into the wider realm of “lifestyle” – with everything related to clothing, accessories, make-up and current trends. There are many special events and catwalk shows, which take place several times daily.
